When Labour came to power it was with the mantra of “Education, Education, Education” at the forefront of its thinking.
Since then the we have been inundated with a plethora of initiatives to make education more "friendly" for pupils, in order for exam results to be hit, and league tables to look rosy. For example, teachers should not mark work with a red pen, as the colour red with a negative comment, may harm the little darling! I kid you not, close friend of mine was told that on her teacher training course.
However, one thing that has been preventing the potential for even greater success in our schools, is these “friendly” policies as they do not install discipline in schools. Something that has caused two close friends of mine to quit teaching altogether. So it is without surprise that I read that an OFSTED report, detailed in today’s Telegraph, stating “Traditional rules such as banning children with shaven heads and those wearing designer trainers or gang colours have proved effective in maintaining order at the best comprehensives”.
Well, pardon me from being a cynic, but this is a clear case of stating the obvious. If a school is disciplined, has a uniform, and a proper code of conduct, then it’s obvious that the school will perform better. Why do you think that grammar schools do so well?
Too much time, and money has been wasted on bizarre schemes to make education friendly. All parents want is the best for the children. Instead of thinking up weird an wonderful ways to make the system “friendly”, or in most cases league table friendly, they should have looked at the best schools, and got the poorer performing ones to up their game.
